Before we get started, if you're looking for recommendations, see our Best Computer Monitors page or gaming-specific Best Gaming Monitors list. We also have high-res picks on our Best 4K Gaming Monitors and Best Budget 4K Monitors pages and break down HDR displays in our How to Choose the Best HDR Monitor article.
If you want ultimate speed that's also not too taxing on your GPU, FHD (1920 x 1080) delivers the highest frame rates (you won't find gaming monitors today with lower resolution). But avoid stretching that resolution past 27 inches, as you may notice a dip in image quality, with pesky individual pixels being visible.
4K gamers should find the fastest card they can afford. The GeForce RTX 3070 might be sufficient for lighter games or if you turn down some settings, but the GeForce RTX 3080/3090 or the Radeon RX 6800 XT or Radeon RX 6900 XT would do you better. For more tips on picking a graphics card, see our Graphics Card Buying Guide (opens in new tab), Best Graphics Cards (opens in new tab) and GPU Benchmarks (opens in new tab) Hierarchy pages. For help choosing a 4K gaming display, see our Best 4K Gaming Monitors (opens in new tab) page.
There are many confusing choices and even more confusing marketing terms to sift through when buying a new gaming monitor. Let's break down the features that actually benefit gamers. Note that some factors depend on a player's skill level.
Competitive gamers should prioritize speed, which calls for high refresh rates (144 Hz or more), as well as the lowest response time and input lag (see our gaming monitor reviews (opens in new tab)) possible. This will likely limit you to 25 or 27 inches, possibly with lower pixel density and without extended color or HDR.
Another thing to keep in mind is that G-Sync relies on DisplayPort, while FreeSync works with both HDMI and DisplayPort. For more on which port is best for gaming, see our DisplayPort vs. HDMI (opens in new tab)analysis. And for more on the two popular Adaptive-Sync flavors, see our G-Sync (opens in new tab) and FreeSync (opens in new tab) pages in the Tom's Hardware Glossary (opens in new tab).
If you plan on doing a lot of competitive gaming with HDR content, consider getting a G-Sync Ultimate or FreeSync Premium Pro display. Both features are certified for lower input latency and include additional benefits for HDR titles.
Moving into the warmer and more picturesque spring season, the weather isn't the only thing hotting up. The CPU market towards the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023 has been topsy-turvy, to say the least, with many viable options available for users to build a new system. Depending on the task at hand, Intel and AMD have strong line-ups with multiple generations of its processors, with both the latest 13th Gen core series (Raptor Lake) and the Ryzen 7000 series (Zen 4/Rapael) leading the charge at the top of the performance charts.Since our previous guide, both Intel and AMD have launched two top-tier processors with exceptional gaming performance to the market, the Intel Core i9-13900KS and, more recently, AMD's gaming-centric Ryzen 9...
This guide is intended to advise users to make a more suitable purchase according to their own needs, avoiding the manufacturers marketing that lead to spending more money than is really necessary.
Top tier VGAs are AMD 7900 XTX and NVIDIA RTX 4090, delivering ultra-high frame rates and serious levels of 4K resolution gaming. Software technologies such as NVIDIA DLSS and AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution allow increasing the performance of the video card at high resolutions through upscaling algorithms, obtaining big improvements in terms of FPS and at the expense of a minimum image quality loss. While DLSS is for the exclusive use of NVIDIA RTX video cards, the AMD counterpart is supported by more cards from both manufacturers.
The choice of which mouse is rather subjective. However, there are some important guidelines that you can follow that allows making a more accurate selection of which mouse you are going to buy. It is important to consider:
In case you were wondering about wireless mice. Our advice is the following: if you're looking for a gaming mouse, wireless mice should be absolutely avoided. Their performances are not at all comparable, even to a mediocre wired mouse.
This has been an exciting year for PC gaming, with new game features in the Windows 10 Creators Update and Windows 10 Fall Creators Update that support gaming for all creators alike. PC gamers rely on Wi-Fi to play multiplayer games, so the better the connection the better the gameplay goes. If the internet cuts out, so does the game. This often brings unwanted frustration. With a Wi-Fi system designed to boost the signal everywhere, a connection is possible even in the most remote areas of the home. This allows the PC setup to be out of the way, as sometimes it may clash with other areas of the house. Expanding the Wi-Fi connection means there will be seamless gameplay no matter where the gaming setup is. In this scenario, everyone benefits.
The compromise is that you do need a pretty powerful gaming PC. One of the biggest pros is that the G2 has an excellent audio, better than most because it uses the same off-ear style of audio speakers as the Valve Index.
One of the best parts about shopping for a new gaming mouse is the sheer amount of choice available out there. There are hundreds of mice to choose from with many catering towards different types of gamers.
A very easy way to narrow down the huge list of gaming mice to choose from is by shopping with a manufacturer you already know and trust. Corsair is a favorite in the gaming world for providing a wide range of products that give gamers great value for money. With products ranging from RAM, power supplies, keyboards, mice, and headsets, Corsair is an accessible brand that regularly gets great reviews.
Having a good quality mouse can mean the difference between life and death in a game. Having a mouse that feels comfortable in your hand, is accurate, and long-lasting is a must when building a gaming setup.
For the user experience, this is a lightweight mouse that is easy to use, but some people may find that the width of it is a bit uncomfortable. The mouse measures 124 x 80 x 38 mm which is wider than your typical gaming mouse. Your comfort using this mouse will be down to personal experience and preference though so you might want to test this one out if you can.
If you are building a gaming system to a theme or perhaps you just want a cool looking mouse, you can always spend a bit extra to get the perfect fit. You can pick up mice in many different sizes, colors, styles, and even with integrated RGB lighting for the ultimate level of customization.
You can also find mice that allow you to change the amount that they weigh using removable weights. This is a great way to find the perfect weight mouse for your gaming style and you can sometimes vary this weight by around 10g depending on the model.
If you have particularly small or large hands, it might be worth finding a mouse lying around that you already find comfortable and shopping for one that is a similar size. Some websites online will also have a size guide that let you measure your hand size to find the perfect sized mouse.

This $500 PC gaming build is as low as you can go in terms of budget and gaming performance, but I was able to actually come in around $400 to $450, giving us a nice bit of extra cash to spend on some other extras/upgrades.
Do note that Amazon prices, (especially electronics) fluctuate significantly and quite literally by the hour, so depending on when you read this guide, the price of the components might exceed the $500 mark depending on whether a certain component has increased on price due to stock levels or demand.
I do edit and update this guide every month or so or when new hardware is released, but I simply cannot do it everyday, whenever there is a price change. For this reason I have given two product recommendations in most of the component categories as a fail safe.
If you really want to take your gaming to the next level, then I highly recommend looking at something like the Nvidia RTX 2060 Super range, such as the EVGA RTX 2060 Super KO Ultra Gaming ($289.99) or EVGA RTX 2060 Super SC Ultra Black Gaming (Price not available).
During the GPU shortage it was actually more affordable to purchase a prebuilt gaming computer, a custom gaming PC, or a gaming laptop than it is to build your own PC. However, with the GPU shortage now over, it is once again cheaper to build your own system.
But, you can get away with spending less and still come away with a powerful gaming PC. Check out our guide on how much it costs to build a gaming PC to get an idea of what kind of performance you should expect for your budget. 59ce067264
